OpenERP web – How to add custom functionalities to the sidebar

I’d like to show how you can add more functionalities to your sidebar on OpenERP web 6.1.

The interesting code from web_export_view module looks like this:

1.    First  (line 3) define your module’s namespace.

2.    then extend (line 7) the sidebar object

3.    and override ‘add_default_sections’ method (line 9)

4.    then we add our new action with its callback to the ‘other’ section using ‘add_items’ function (line 37)

Unfortunately the sidebar is not so modular at this point. As I commented into the code, if we had a registry for sidebar sections/actions we could just define ours and register it. But, for the time being you’ll need to override the original method and maintain by copy&paste the “real default” sections/actions (for the original one, have a look at the core web module).

OpenERP 6.1 Adopts Social Features, Expands Outlook Support

OpenERP has released a new version of its open source enterprise management software suite, which comprises 1,800 free applications for accounting, human resources, and other organization management needs. OpenERP 6.1 was in development for more than a year and introduces 85 new applications, including social features and a kanban view for organizing activities.

OpenERP has added new social features to facilitate collaboration. Users can share documents with anyone, even those who aren't OpenERP users, and specify read-only or read-write access to those documents.

OpenERP has also added the ability to embed any OpenERP content on an organization's Web site. This feature is useful for contact forms, so online entries are automatically entered into OpenERP. It also enables organizations to easily export statistics or graphs to their Web site.

Other new social features include improved e-mail integration, which has been unified into a single and improved e-mail subsystem, and according to OpenERP, is easier to use than the old e-mail capabilities of version 6.0. Also, the main business workflows now automatically send e-mail notification upon confirmation by default.

OpenERP is also touting its new kanban view, which is a visual board that enables users to view and manage their activities on a single interface using drag-and-drop.

New features in OpenERP 6.1 include:

• Significant performance enhancements as a result of the new Web client and architecture that can support multiple servers and multi-processing;
• Drag-and-drop kanban view to reorganize records such as tasks, opportunities, and recruitment while maintaining a global view;
• Customizable dashboards for each application;
• Reusable advanced filters;
• Dynamic Gantt charts; and
• New Outlook plugin that has been completely redeveloped from scratch using Microsoft .NET so it is now compatible with all versions of Outlook.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Open Source ERP Technology

In 2011, the year of open source technology. Because at this point is provided with open source technology at an affordable price if we compare it with the ERP service. Still, ERP software is one of the most important component of a business enterprise and has become a necessity to implement ERP software in order to improve its business processes. There are various kinds of ERP software as Open Source ERP, for example. This can easily be had of course with lots of great advantage to be obtained. ERP Software as Open Source ERP can be downloaded from the Internet and run in any business environment in order to meet business needs without the need to pay for it.

ERP client server has been implemented by many large media companies despite the fact that this application is quite expensive. Due to great prices most small and medium-sized companies never think to implement the software in their business systems. After the Open Source ERP was launched in the market, things have changed. Because Open Source ERP is able to meet the needs of the sector are small businesses, small and medium-sized companies many started using this software. More on, a free application requests for this application has increased rapidly. All the features of ERP is determined more companies to test in their business environment.

Clearly many companies spend large amounts of money to get ERP software licenses, to obtain professional services as software implementation and training of employees. Using Open Source ERP does not require a license or implementation. It can only download from the internet, installed in the system and run your business. Download and installation process lasted only a few minutes and open source ERP will start working for you immediately, of course ERP software has advantages and disadvantages as other software.

One disadvantage is the fact that companies that use Open Source ERP is not able to take advantage of the services offered by the vendor because the company manages all the business independently. In this case, if a simple mistake is not corrected immediately can have adverse effects and may prove to be an expensive affair. More on, the company will not be offered professional assistance so that it will be forced to learn from mistakes.

Open Source ERP technology has several limitations. For example, they could not find any application in all activities of the company and it is useless when it comes about conventional practices. It is not advisable to implement open source technologies without modifying the old way the system works.

By considering that the type of ERP is a free application and the client does not need to spend large sums of money for the Budget itPsychology, they do not expect to find all the features we usually meet in a traditional client server ERP software.

But despite its limits of Open Source ERP remains the best option for everyone assume that companies that implement and use this software to streamline their business with lower costs.
